AREP Designlab worked hand in hand with SNCF Gares & Connexions and the engineers of the French startup Immersive Robotics to design a next-generation waste bin robot. The project, which is currently on trial, was completed in six months and is now part of the communications campaign for clean stations.
When a traveller waves at the robot, it can weave its way through the crowd to collect waste, encouraging people to get the habit to throw rubbish in the trash can.
Designing connected devices to serve both users and station operators
The robot embeds LiDAR technology and cameras and uses beeps and flashing LEDs to interact with users. A probe analyzes its fill level and controls the return of the bin to its base for cleaning. The design allows the embedment of complex technology into the device, while its form arouses the interest of travellers. Station operators find the waste bin robot both unobtrusive and convenient.
With B.A.R.Y.L, AREP designlab launches a broad reflection on connected devices aimed at providing services to users and station operators.
