Refitting of an avenue - Length: 2 km

  • Client: Paris City Authorities
  • Project leader: Roads and Traffic Department
  • Project Management: AREP / Landscaping: Latitude Nord
  • Delivery: 2006
A 2 km stretch of the Avenue Jean-Jaurès in northern central Paris has been restructured to channel road traffic and modify the distribution of public space among the different modes of movement.
The redevelopment limits the roadway to single-lane traffic each way, with car drop-off and parking bays alternating on either side, plus lateral cycle lanes and a separate bus lane running for 450 m. An esplanade has also been created in front of the Parc de la Villette, while intersections and set-back façades provide space for small public squares and planted seating areas. Supporting the existing line of trees along the Avenue, flower beds are set at irregular intervals to form local green spaces. Pedestrians have been given back their rightful space, with broad, protected sidewalks.
