Cairo is an infinity of small spaces, weaving the city identity through centuries. This project focuses on four of them: “Kubri” / The bridge, “Midan” / The square, “Geneina” / The intimate garden, “Zuqâq” / The narrow alley.

Reinterpreting these typologies, the project drifts from large streets to narrow alleys, finding intimacy in small shared gardens. While the canal is held North and South by two squares, bridges are creating links between the two banks transitioning the flow from one side to the next.

Directly connected to one of Cairo’s main highways, the site is ideally located half way between the airport and the touristic Islamic City. Addressed to Heliopolis’s upper middle class residents, the project has the ambition to become a new destination in Cairo’s cityscape. Program diversity is then essential to offer the visitors a truly new urban experience. Developed with retails, hotels,  housings and offices, the canal also hosts hot cultural spots and public gardens.

Offering visitors this diversity of programs, the canal dovetails along an array of confortable outdoor spaces and slows down flows by a constant discovery of this evolving environment. A narrow space between the canal and the buildings offers more visibility for retails on the ground floor, while also expanding in some areas allowing more diversity (water features, steps, etc.). The canal  shorelines are designed to be distorted, at times to host a small garden or a restaurant terrace. To pass from one bank to another,  bridges are designed between retails, assuring an important flow of visitors. Following Cairo’s tradition, bridges are not only a place to cross, there are also made to stay and enjoy the view!
