The station is being rebuilt to the south, close to the city centre and in the heart of the transport hub.

An urban footbridge both allows to access the platforms and links Kerentrech district to the city centre during the station opening hours.  The main façade opens up to the heart of the city and alludes to the city’s shipbuilding tradition. The linear form of the building, stretching over 115 metres, gives the station an imposing presence. The double skin made of fibre-reinforced concrete accommodates all the openings related to the various elements of the project (station entrance, retail outlets, offices) and protects the façade from solar radiation. The north façade is mostly glazed and its large openings allow views of the new TER platform (express regional lines), the rail tracks, the future north access and the historic district of Kerentrech. The Lorient multi-modal transport hub is part of the “Bretagne à Grande Vitesse” project (“High-speed rail for Brittany”), which will allow a three-hour total travel time between Quimper, Brest and Paris from July 2017. 

Building works
The passenger building accommodates a large concourse featuring a Douglas-fir timber frame as well as concrete floors, columns and beams that ensure stability.

  • The structure consists of 24 portal frames made of Douglas-fir laminated timber having a span of between 12 and 19 metres and a height of 11 metres. The stress in the braces is distributed to the concrete structure over a length of 113 metres by the timber roof plan.
  •  The footbridge forms a 60-metre link between the two sides of the tracks and consists of two spans of 30 metres each.
  • The bus station shelter stretches out over 160 metres and forms a canopy supported by beams set every 4.80 metres.

Lorient train station, winner of the 2018 Construction Trophies
As part of the 2018 Construction Trophies organised by Batiactu, Lorient Bretagne Sud station won the Construction - ERP (Établissement Recevant du Public) Award.

Designed by AREP, the station was created as part of the extension of the Atlantic high-speed line. A major public facility, occupying a strategic place in the city, the station's architecture affirms Lorient's identity by reflecting its maritime environment.

The Construction Trophies have been awarded for 17 years to the most innovative achievements in the construction sector. For this 2018 edition, 21 projects were rewarded for their innovation out of 140 participating projects.
