MODULAR SUSTAINABLE PASSENGER ECO-SHELTER
A new concept of sustainable eco-shelter
- Client: SNCF
- Prime Contractor: SNCF Gares & Connexions, AREP
The sustainable eco-shelter is a new concept for passenger wait areas on branch lines with built-in solutions to ergonomic and environmental requirements.
From a number of possible approaches (14 "HEQ" high environmental quality target criteria) the preferred solutions were those focusing on the comfort of the "travelling citizen" in harmony with their immediate environment. As far as possible, shelters are oriented in relation to the sun and the prevailing winds, or to natural vegetation cycles, thus providing passengers with a high-quality waiting experience unusual in a rail travel framework. The shelters are prefabricated in kits. Several configurations can thus be developed for tailoring to the specific site or service required. It takes only a week to assemble the prefabricated components in-situ.
The slightly raised floors minimise the shelter’s footprint but are easily accessible to the disabled by means of a shallow ramp. The whole shelter constitutes a haven of peace and quiet, in close harmony with the surrounding, controlled natural environment, somewhat long the lines of the Zen gardens in traditional Japanese living spaces.
